FEEDBACK:
Bicycling for health, air, water, and prosperity

more car stories

Thank you for your efforts. I am in full agreement with what your organization has said and is doing. Besides not purchasing SUV to further the ends of which you have spoken, one may also decrease the number of miles driven if one has a SUV to further those same ends, obviously not as effectively as by not owning one.

Our group, Pedaling Empowers Daily Active Life-styles (PEDAL), is an a bicycle-based organization to help children stay healthy, to reduce air and water pollution and to increase local prosperity. Please review our website for how we do what we say we do.

Though there is solid support in our community for what we are doing, we do now and then encounter a mother who is concerned about putting their child on a bicycle. Now, we do not allow children to enter our program until they have gone through a free bicycle safety course (or a document showing they have already been through one) nor can they participate if they do not own an approved helmet (if they can not afford one, we will find a way to get them one). Yet, for some there is still that worry. Now we have statistics that show the fact that lack of exercise and being overweight is more dangerous than riding a bicycle. We also have statistics that show what burning a gallon of gasoline produces in terms of pollution. What we don't have is the likelihood of serious injury and death resulting from driving a SUV. Do you have such information or can you point me to where we may find that information?

Thank you, again, for your efforts and keep up the good work.

Dear Michael, Thank YOU for your efforts, and for getting in touch with us. I am one of those moms who is paranoid about bicycles where there are cars. We go out and find bike paths away from cars. SF has some really exciting and ambitious bike plans in the works. You can google San Francisco Bicycle Coalition to learn more -- it will be a lot faster than waiting for me to find their web address -- but we can't wait for the safer bicycling opportunities it will bring for kids in this City.

Take care,

Lynn@DBF
